PERGAP – EduTrack Data

Explore Country-Comparative Data on Educational Tracking

The Comparative Educational Stratification Dataset – EduTrack – provides indicators for comparative and longitudinal research on educational tracking, also referred to as educational streaming or ability grouping. The EduTrack dataset was collected within the framework of the PERGAP project.

Visualisation

How do countries perform on educational stratification? Learn more about your own country? Advance research on educational stratification? This map provides access to the first version of the EduTrack data available for 88 countries and spanning from 2003 to 2022. You can click on each country to find contextual information on the country’s educational tracking score and its defining characteristics. You can zoom in on specific regions or download maps in full format. Or you can visualize the change in educational tracking over time, by pressing the play bottom in left tool bar.

Data

The main objective of EduTrack is to provide systematically comparable and up-to-date information on educational tracking, thereby supporting empirical research on the causes and consequences of educational stratification. Information was compiled from secondary sources, i.e., OECD reports and the UNESCO Institute for Statistics database. Educational stratification scores were estimated using principal component factor analysis based on three indicators: (1) the age at which students are first selected into different school types or distinct educational programmes; (2) the number of school types or distinct educational programmes available to 15-year-old students; and (3) the length of the tracked curriculum as a percentage of the total length of primary and secondary education. EduTrack extends the educational tracking data compiled by Thijs Bol and Herman van de Werfhorst for the early 2000s and substantially expands their geographical and temporal coverage.

Storage

The dataset and the documenting material will be available for download on the repository CORA – Repositori de dades de Recerca – and are free to use. All materials will be updated regularly as new data becomes available.
