Dr. Simone Schneider, PI of PERGAP, presented the PERGAP project at the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy in Munich as part of the Institute’s Academic Talk series. In her presentation, Institutional Imprints of Social Disparity – Introducing a New Conceptual Framework for the Quantitative Comparison of Welfare States, Simone introduced PERGAP’s conceptual framework for identifying and measuring how social disparities are embedded in institutional arrangements.
Rather than focusing exclusively on welfare-state spending or social outcomes, the framework considers the institutional rules and structures through which social security systems distribute resources, opportunities, and risks. Developing comparable institutional indicators is a key element of PERGAP’s efforts to understand how institutional contexts contribute to the production and perception of social inequality.
The presentation was followed by an exchange with colleagues at the Institute on the conceptualisation and operationalisation of PERGAP’s institutional indicators, highlighting opportunities for further discussion and collaboration around the comparative study of welfare states and social inequality.
